RAILTOWN BRIDGE RAILING
Commissioned by the City of Nelson, BC, Canada
September, 2011

Or(e): Nelson---Railtown Bridge Railing (working title)

Prior to this design competition, I have completed two works for public display under the title Or(e): Nelson.  The first in 2006 for the inaugural exhibition at Touchstones Nelson; followed by a temporary outdoor sculpture installed on the grounds of Nelson City Hall as part of Oxygen Art Centre’s BOOM! Project in 2008.  Both of these works examine the transformation of community as determined by its economy.  Or(e) on a personal level can best be defined in comparing the reasons my Grandfather moved to this area in the early 1900’s (to work in the mines) to those that brought me here in 1991 (to work on my art).

My first visit to the project location resulted in a design response that was all about the railway--- the bridge connects Baker Street to the area designated as Railtown, the CP Rail Station house is being  restored, the old CPR Superintendent’s house overlooks it all... but then a kid rolled by on his skateboard, and I thought, “how modern, what contrast, how Or(e).” Therefore, the concept behind my design will focus on the crossing of Cottonwood Creek.  My Grandfather may have hired a horse and cart to move his family and supplies, I drive a Jeep--- my railing design will be a multi-layered array of wheels and cogs of that which has crossed.
